Two Moons

Two Moons, a Northern Cheyenne, was one of three models James Earle Fraser used when he sculpted the indian head nickel. Two Moons was a survivor of the Little Big Horn. I was fascinated by the strength of character in his face and the hint of humor. I wish I knew what was the source of the humor, was it directed at himself or at the man taking his picture.

This 8x8 portrait was done “after” the style of David Miller by Texas Portrait artist Juli Koroly.

This portrait is the second in my "after" David Miller series. This Native American woman's expression shows her confusion and curiosity. She would not have been use to the attention of a photographer.

Humans are traditionally the subjects of portraiture but when I read "Water for Elephants"I felt I wanted to memorialize the character "Rosie". She embodied courage, gentleness, loyalty and intelligence. I love doing portraits because they give the artist the opportunity to portray the essence of the subject as they see it. It is another way of seeing beyond a photograph image. It gives me the right to use my "personal lens". I have always loved faces even if they include a trunk.

Several years ago I obtained a collection on copies of Edward Curtis's photographs. Curtis was one of the first portrait photographers to specialize in native americans. He has had the ability to catch character.
